You need to go to menu extra, find Google drive and vo+space on it. You will
be presented with a number of choices. Press “more” and you should be in the
preferences for Google Drive. There you can determine whether your files sync
and are available off-line.

They are perfectly accessible, and you can definitely use them across any
browser that supports Google Apps. I prefer using Apple’s
Pages/Keynote/Numbers most of the time as I can collaborate within the app

A couple of things which seem to make it better.
First I use chrome rather than safari.
Second, you can go to tools/accessibility options when in a Google doc and
uncheck the braille mode checkbox. Braille mode is pretty good on Windows
