Move vo to the html area and bring up the context menu with vo-shift-m. The
options this gives you are different than the file menu in this case.

While the video is playing, just hit command-i or choose it from the window
menu. It will be in the general tab.
You are just using VLC to get the true address of the file so you can open it
directly in Safari where you can download it.

finish up with an MP4 version of the video in some location which I can find on
my Mac.
Please note that I am not familiar with VLC. I have installed VLC on my Mac and
have managed to play the desired youtube

VLC is very helpful with this.
Copy the URL from the Safari address field. Then in VLC, open the URL from
the open network stream dialog.
Find the item in the play list table, go into media information and find
the location address and copy it.
