Why not just make a cd copy of yosemite if you ever need to re-install. then
you wouldn't have to go through the download process again.

You probably encountered a loss-of-focus problem in the installer. Simply do
VO-F1-F1 (that’s F1 twice, quickly) to get the app chooser, and select the
installer and window again. Don’t forget FN while you’re on the laptop
keyboards too.

Thanks to all for your responses on my trouble with Yosemite clean install. In
the end, I had to ask sighted assistance since Voiceover would sometimes speak
during the installation and then it would disappear again. The machine I was
doing the clean install is late 2010 macbook air
What about trying to turn up your system volume? The commands are F12 to
increase, and F11 to decrease. You may need to hold down the function key as
you execute these commands.

Try cmd-f5. Even if the installer is proceeding, assuming the Mac isn't
restarting or something, you should get speech. It might be that VO is actually
on and you'll turn it off; in that case, just press cmd-f5 again.
