As it turns out (thanks to Jean-Marc Lasgouttes), it is normal LaTeX
behavior to justify the figure captions anyway (unless it is one line and
then it is centered).
So, the problem has nothing to do with the caption or caption2 packages

and/or facing a similar problem:
1. Don't use standard class book but rather koma--script book or memoir
classes for the added flexibility
2. Either use the Geometry package for maximum flexibility in setting
page layout or lea
