only pb was the version of autoconf which is 2.52d. So the place for a letter
should be added to the $autoversion test in autogen.sh file:

"float" means you want LaTeX to move the figure to its idea of the "best"
location. If that is not what you want, don't use a "float"!

Sorry, I can't seem to replicate this problem. I have tried culling my
thesis to a reasonable size and it seems to work fine with the smaller
file. Even in my thesis it works sometimes, but not others.
It is possible that I have somewhere put a command that has stuffed up
the labelling?
