It's not a serious problem, just an inconvenience, because the file
under /tmp is there.
If you run your PDF viewer of choice in a terminal and attempt to open
the PDF file compiled by LyX, does it open, does it emit error messages,
or does it just silently fail?

You have to activate instant preview beforehand, going to

just click the first table toolbar button and add a new last row.
Put the cursor in the first cell and type "This table is way to effing
long", then right click your way to the Multi-page table tab and click
the "on" checkbox next to "Caption:".
