Any idea why this failes? Is tehre a way to open the file in e.g. emacs
and remove the offending stuff? But how can I find it?

On my Intel-RH-Linux 6.1 system (libc.so.6, libforms.so.0.89) LyX 1.0.4 crashes
always when I close the "insert [e]ps figure" dialog. Gdb tells me as
backtrace:

There are LOTS of programs around which can convert JPEG to other formats,
