Yes, I use QTikZ,
http://www.hackenberger.at/blog/ktikz-editor-for-the-tikz-language/ to
create the diagrams, then paste the results into LyX (wrapped by a preview).

Personally I'd go with what you have. The best is the enemy of the good.
If someone gets picky and wants a table heading or "continued on next page"
crap just stick it in a custom header or footer.
