Can't find libXpm

This is an old problem and probably not LyX, but maybe someone else has figured it out. My system is hacked from an old slackware linux 3.5. converted to glibc2.1 If I complile the sources for xpm from the slackware CD LyX works, but wp8 cannot find xpm. If I install the binaries for xpm from the
