look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and look for errors.
If you need help please use pastebin and send the link so we can examine it.
This is the first step to find out what is wrong with your graphics.
It *could* be a driver issue, or something else is wrong.

So, as I understand it you are saying that all the other _Ubuntu 16.04
flavors work just fine_, but _Lubuntu does not_.
In my experience VirtualBox is not a very good judge of whether

I tried out lxqt with i3, and the i3 workstations work with the default
lxqt panel as you probably already know.
Not only that, but the application buttons work too.

I humbly suggest a look at the cost and benefits of making i3 easily
incorporated into the LXQT desktop.
This would require programming a plugin for the LXQT toolbar.
