what is out there now is just plain bad.

Can I get my point over, one more time? Any live CD needs more
resources to run from CD/DVD than it does to run from hard drive. Your
problem may simply be that your computer doesn't have enough resources
to run a Lubuntu live CD/DVD. OTOH, there are various isos for Lubuntu
- there is "alternate" which is used only for installs, never as a
live CD/DVD - are you trying to use "alternate"? If so, please try
using the "desktop" iso as that is intended to act as a live CD/DVD,
if required.

CD produced for some time, may be never
