Inthe case of lubuntu, it most likely is lighdm and not gdm. You good
people with the kit can tell us and we can ensure any instructions are

Aloha everyone,
Thanks again for the swift replies. If you head down to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/ Documentation/MinimalInstall
you'll see the installation instructions have been altered. I've also added
more information about the differences between the core and desktop
packages.
Is there somewhere a package list for 12.04 beta 1 ppc?

I noticed yesterday's update corrected the version to "Lubuntu instead of
Ubuntu" when running < cat /etc/lsb-release > on my i386 Desktop installs.
After updating my amd64 desktop installation it remained version "Ubuntu"
??.
Very Cool.. thanks Julien

Yes, lighdm and not gdm, but my point being we shouldn't have to do this manual
entry. (And that this has been a known problem for a while.)
The original note applies to "hacking" the live CD install.
We'd just as well tell folks to use the alternate and modify the xorg.conf file.
What I do know
Thanks,
certainly for now, a good set of instructions using the alternate for G3
may be prefferable to hacking the LiveCD, such set of notes can be posted
to the wiki area with a release note letting people know where to find it?
But, I'll let you guys continue testing and find the least painful

I'm still having problems on G4's with very dark/no text or very dark/faint

I'm thinking the revised theme is not being picked up, but I'm minded to
wait until Raphael has gotten the theme completely re-written before
raising a bug. Annoying it is for all concerned, but he's working as fast
as he can.

As I replied to another mention of this, I know it is frustrating, but I
think we have little choice but to wait until Raphael has gotten the new
theme fully written and released before we go nagging him. He's working as
fast as he can, but it is a lot of work.

Paul,
Sorry I accidentally sent an earlier version of this post directly to
you email address.
Anyway, I got my iMac G3 working again and tested the following with the
beta1 liveCD on my G3 iMac:
Boot from CD and wait until command prompt appears then type the
following commands:

No problem, but it looks like someone beat you to your great idea.

As the CD is mounted during install, I'd have to check!
As to if we could get a feature freeze exception to have the additional
file put onto the CD, that would take some serious begging!
But, please do battle on - I've got a gold medal in begging :)

Phill.

Paul,
Argh! Posted directly to you instead of the list again. I've requested
the list be put on Gmane, which should stop me doing this...
It would be a lot simpler to have the xorg.conf in the home directory of
the lubuntu user. That way the amount of typing could be kept down to:
sudo mv x
Phill,
I would think that the argument would be that we are not changing any
features in the installed distribution, but changing the install CD to
cope with some hardware issues discovered in testing. The xorg.conf
included would only end up on the user's machine if they have an iMac

Some more details:
I tried to identify the graphics hardware on the iMac G3 using dmesg
(which is quick compared to something like lshw) and got the following:

most interesting,
the last long standing bug was when Apple renamed themselves internally on
the system, so the the install routine failed to spot the new name! This
may have some milage, as they patched for that one on the installer a
couple of years ago :)
