Not sure if this is a bug report or an observation.

On three G4 Macs, two with ATI cards, one with Nvidia, the installer screens on
the desktop iso's seem black or very dark
(As does the Archive Manager, Character Map, and some other preferences,
following installation.)

But after seeing an i386 install, I'm thinking the "black" background isn't
black, its the opposite or reverse of the grey background all the PC folks see.
The text is there, and the same color as on the i386, but on these G4 PPC's,
something is happening with the video to cause the text background areas to
reverse. Depending on the contrast setting of the monitor, the text is absent
or faint.

And since the reversal is not system-wide, what ever engine drives the display
of those installer windows and some other windows is simply not set properly
for PPC. I don't know what that might be though. Just an observation.

Sincerely,
Paul Gorski

I really am starting to lose my patience with that guy. RTFM is NOT the answer!

Hi Phill,

Thanks for listening!

As far as G3 and G4 support: I would think it important to make sure we could
get successful installs on most models in the G3 and G4 class. Otherwise, on
the Macs, it leaves us with G5's. And quite frankly, there are more dead G5's
out there than live ones. Power supply problems with the G5 iMacs and PowerMacs
eventually "toast" the logic boards on many models.

By the way, I've been a Mac system administrator for twenty years, ran a
service and support operation for some of that time, and have been trying to
get a predictable Linux install on PPC Macs for a few years now. I think we can
have that with Lubuntu 12.04, and these Macs can live the rest of their useful
lives running Lubuntu, especially if more web sites move to HTML5 and dump
Flash.
That's why I'm willing to test, test and test.

Hi Paul,

if this has been an ongoing thing which is fixable for G3 without 'killing' the
others then I can certainly ask that it be further investigated. The QA team
are aware that we cannot get G3 macs to work. We can ask ... they can only say
no :)

As ppc is mainly community driven and I don't think there are thousands out
there, if a community edition *just* for G3 is needed I am not adverse to
hosting it - but I know it would be far, far prefferable to get the G3 running
with the existing ppc iso. Having an install option on the boot *just* for G3,
does seem something worth further investigation as it should ensure all the
ubuntu family who have ppc as an option can use it.

Phill,

I'll start using the iso-tracker.

On the G4 - still have dark/black screens with certain windows (not Archive
Manager anymore though) - I will be documenting which ones.
And it would really be nice to take care of the dark screens for the desktop
installer, that's the only major hiccup in that installer for G4.

On the G3 - I'm not a programmer, but for all the years I've been testing Linux
variants, the G3 iMac has been a problem. I know how to fix it following an
alternate install, by editing xorg.conf and modifying screen, display and
monitor settings. Then it works great, wireless and all.
Is there anyway developers can build those fixes into the xorg server? (

Especially for Lubuntu, an iMac G3 is a great candidate for theses OSes.
Perhaps the PPC live CD could be altered to boot differently.
Right now, the desktop CD boots pretty much straight to a Lubuntu desktop (or
is supposed to). But on the PC/Intel side you are greeted by a list of option,
Try, Install and the like.
Perhaps a Try, Install, Install - special - G3 iMac

Intel-based Macbook Pro - my first experience this weekend was positive. The
desktop i386 works fine, installs quickly. The trackpad is a little jumpy and
odd after the install though.

Hi Paul,

I'm trying to get people used to using the iso-tracker (
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/204/builds ) as it is only when
activity is seen on the variants e.g. it at least installs will the QA team
allow a release candidate to go on and become a mile stone release (Beta 2 is
the next one). If the links from iso-tracker are wrong, it is a bug :)

Great to see the G4 one settling down a bit! Getting a G3 to install okay is
still a problem, but I think that applies to all the ubuntu-ppc iso's and not
just the lubuntu one.

Phill.

You all have been prolific in your emails, and instead of back tracking to find

(I go straight to http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/ and choose the
sub-directories I need, not aware of any linking issues)

1) Lubuntu precise-desktop-powerpc.is 20120304 boots on eMac G4 800MHz (this
time with Nvidia graphics).
However installer screens are still dark, black. Changing the appearance to
Crux with a different background color makes the window readable.
Installs OK after that.
Note: login screen is no longer black with white text following application of
most recent updates - Thank you!

2) Lubuntu precise-desktop-i386 20120304 boots on Intel-based Macbook Pro 17"
(circa 2006). Lots of little crashes once it is up and running, all have been
reported. Trackpad (mouse) need to be adjusted to get trackpad working - set
sensitivity and response to 100, max values.
Isn't there a separate Trackpad preference setting?
Airport Extreme wireless works out of the box following the install (not from
CD.) Nice.

I've altered the ubuntu testing team to the typo.

If the daily-live does not boot, then raise a bug for it and add to the
tracker. Does the ubuntu daily-live boot? if not, then the bug would probably
be best raised against ubiquity with 'affects also' set to lubuntu and ubuntu.

Phill.

Good call. Adding -live to the URL has an image, but not one that
boots. Is it worth a bug report for either 1) fixing the URL, or 2)
getting an image that boots? Or should we just wait it out?
