What about trying tarcepath ? That will get you much more information.
Also try the resolver for dns names. Use ip numbers when tracinging the
path.
if you get nowhere, try to sniff the activity (tcpdump/ethereal). Make
sure your iptables is turned off (or logging all discarded/rejected
packets
