ecrm.mf should be in tetex, it's in
/usr/share/texmf/fonts/source/jknappen/ec/ecrm.mf

Well, the problem is that dvips is running mktexpk, which in turn would
run gsftopk, but without --mapfile=ec-mftrace.map
The second problem is that neither tetex-tiny nor tetex-base (in cygwin)
doesn't contain jknappen's ec MF files.
So either mktexpk should be patched, or the mf fonts include

tetex-extra, not in tetex-base as I thought. Sorry for the

What is ljfour mode? The lilypondfiles are fine, and convert-ly did ok
with them. I ran convert-ly on the .lytex file and it changed nothing

I figured out my problem. I was changing the font to Adobe Helvetic, "phvr",
which must use a different font map. When I took that statement out, I got the
proper characters. What I'll do for now is just use the sans font-family.
