Many thanks -- I had in fact tried to install from that script, but probably
hadn't thoroughly uninstalled the 2.16.2.

I think I'm going to have to stick with my current version until

whose software manager *still* points at 2.16.2. Someone will get
around to it sooner or later. I've tried building from source, but

Any problems - ask the list. There are no stupid questions. If you
can, always provide a Minimal Working Example (MWE) which you in fact

Hi Piers,
Yes, welcome. Forgive me for sounding harsh. but asking about a
version that is effectively completed unsuppported in practice and on
the list is roughly the same as asking for support for WIndows ME now
on a WIndows 10 list. Not sure where you even get 2.16 from now!
Also, in my hurry
Newbie... I suspect I may be doing something very stupid.
Thank you in advance for your patience.

Hello,
Welcome here.
\version "2.16.2" indicates that you are using an old version of
LilyPond. Everything seems fine over here with version 2.20.0. Attached
is the output.

Hi Piers,
You can't just make up barlines. Please read the NR, Section 1.2.5 for 2.21.6.
New bar line types can be defined with \defineBarLine.
And, um, are you seriously using 2.16.2? Why? That is so utterly out
of date that I am shocked. Even stable version 2.18 has been out for
so many years

Thank you in advance for your patience.
