Sam, This doesn't really answer your question, but it might provide a different perspective. In handbell music, it is standard to number each measure centered over the barlines. Normally the number should be above ties, slurs and notes, as shown in your MWE. I think it helps readability. I use:

Of course, but the trial-and-error method for placing the slurs is really time consuming. Maybe the only one that needs a help with a GUI editor. The method I described is not difficult, really.
