You can't use a metal or composite prop on a VWs for fear of cracking the
crankshaft. Doesn't Corvair have a weakness in this area as well?

I would caution that the AS504x airfoil series was not tested in icing
conditions. Simulated bug guts yes but not ice.

IFR,
My wooden prop has a brass leading edge, many wooden props come with some type

Hercules props have a composite leading edge. I flew IFR for many hours with no
problems. Also, just because you are in cloud, it doesn't
I there an aluminum or composite prop that could be used in place of a
wood prop? I am just now gearing up to build a KR2S and follow these
threads with great interest.
I have a Corvair engine that I plan to use in this project.

I'm building mine to be IFR capable. I have embedded my VOR /localizer,

when the time comes, I'd like a basic wing leveler or a/p. I installed
one into my avid and it made XC more tolerable, ez to read charts, and
a big safety option if accidentally experiencing marginal visibility.

Good for you. Except for ice, which everybody has to be concerned
Mike Stirewalt, IFR in my KR is not gonna happen. First off, By the time I
upgraded the panel and purchased auto pilot servo's I would double the cost off
the plane. Secondly, I just don't want to fly in bad weather, especially if I
can't see the ground.

Whoa there horsey! I merely mentioned IFR at night as to describe my desire
for the planes capability. I will most likely never do this. After all, a
twin comanche that flies daily will still lose an engine after SIX A&P and 3
IA's inspect it and will still end up being consumed by Idaho Rock

Anythings possible but the general census is the KR is not
a good IFR platform. If you need IFR capabilities you probably
ought to look at something other
I agree that there are acceptable circumstances where the KR is a good platform
for IFR conditions, the same as there are some that apply to a C152. I would
not take a C152 into what Instrument Pilots know as hard IMC, but the
flexibility to be able to descend through a cloud layer like Marty &
Dana set out a good instrument training program in his earlier message. I would
like to add my 2 cents.
I do not plan to go IFR in my KR, but sometimes it can happen, I can tell you a
story about inadvertent IFR in a Huey. We were taught in the Army that anytime
you enter IMC (instrument meteo
In the early years of flying my KR there were times that I wished I had more
instruments. Remember that the design goal of the KR was to keep it light
and fly fast. I tried to do that initially and just kept wishing for more
equipment. My first wish came while crossing Lake Michigan enroute t

Did you have to use an anti-backfire valve or just put it behind the

Just say NO !! Unless u have a Cont 0200 with a real live vacuum system! I
have lost 5 engines and 2 of them were in night IFR conditions...believe me,
it will increase your laundry bill immediately ! Don't do it guys!
