Attached to the aileron horns: did that with mine, The weight fits in a pocket
in the bottom of the wing. In the aileron level position only about half of the
balance weight is exposed. Affords a more secure attachment to the aileron.

I've been a lurker for years and there is a lot of great wisdom and information
out there and I am interested in your thoughts! I am thinking of building the
aileron balance and mounting it to the aileron horn, that way I think I can
keep the weight inside the wing. All thoughts and ideas are ap
Darren,
Your balancing method will depend on the type of aileron you wish to
use. Friese style ailerons like the type Mark L used on his plane can be
balanced very easily and effectively and it's not as untidy as some of
the other balancing techniques. Contact me off list if you want some

I made my weight brackets stronger than the plans, but used T6 with a gusset
down the middle, hoping to stop them from braking.
The balance arm was one of my very big concerns, I could not see HOW the
standard arm could support a hunk of lead vibrating on one end, and not
brake??

I once flew a radio controlled plane (an Astro Hog) that was over
powered by 50% into a power dive, and half way through the dive it made
a very loud "brappp" noise (much louder than the engine noise at
WOT) and then I witnessed part of the empennage fall away. When I
landed the plane, I found
"I need to make a building decision.
What is the general consensus on installing aileron balances."
I am not yet flying but all of my surfaces are mass balanced. As I
understand it, mass balancing a surface is just weighting it in such a
way as to move its natural frequency out of the likely op

I don't of ANYbody that's not installed aileron balance weights on their KR.
I guess somebody's welcome to try it, but the plans say to do it, and
probably for good reason. Elevator is optional, perhaps, but
Hi all.
I need to make a building decision.
What is the general consensus on installing aileron balances. I can see
that some do and some don't and some have even lost them in flight.
Are ailerons less prone to flutter than elevators as it appears that
everyone balances the latter and sometimes t
Hi Netters,
I enjoyed the photographs on Jerry & Dan's Aircraft Factory covering the
aileron construction. May I suggest that instead of melting lead and pouring
it into a mold, you consider making a Styrofoam plug, the size of the
weight. put a layer of fiberglass on it. After it is hard, pour
The book shows the aileron balance arm going forward right at the bottom of
the aileron. Has anyone dropped it lower to remove the need to cut into the
wing during aileron movement? Did it cause any problems?
