You probably meant to say that transmitting on the radio sends out enough
spurious signals so that it tricks the transponder into se
too busy to ask for favors like testing equipment.

Mark,
I don't know too much about transponders, but I guess the little red
light comes off the back of the receiver amplifier, and that it just
responds to RF and does not care too much about the frequency.
Co-ax cable is very, very good at shielding signal, nothing gets out of
those suckers,

Something else could be the trouble and I have not seen that
possibility mentioned by others with their excellent replies.
The coaxial cable that goes from your transce
My panel mount transceiver and transponder with encoder all work great with
very strong signals reception etc.. However, when I key my mike via a control
stick mounted PTT button, I notice that the ident light on my transponder will
glow brightly while transmitting. ATC has never said anything a
You have probably thought of this but since the push to talk button is
nothing more than closing a ground in the circuit I would start by
checking to see where it might becoming a common ground through the
wiring harness. You might ask the controller next time to make sure it is
not identing also.
Shield those wires. Check for ground loop, Virg

I have been studying the pin outs and checking everything on my plane for
proper wiring and grounding to try and get it done properly. On the transponder
pin diagram there is a note that reads "transmission may me suppressed by
either grounding pin one or applying a positive voltage to pin 15".
