Can someone please explain why connecting to a separate lug is of any
benefit when the entire system must be connected to the single ground lug on
the battery? It is all electrically the same thing, isn't it?

Dan,
I'm sure that someone while chime in with the high tech version,
but I look at it as trying to dissipate the ground over as large of a
ground as possible as soon as possible. The engine or the engine mount
become the finial point as the largest chunks of metal in the plane by
default.

All wire has resistance, and if it has resistance, it drop
Ask a radio shop and they will tell you not to install
all of your grounds to the same lug. It really makes a
difference.
