To test, I built kernel packages based on 4.4.0-45.66 with the two patches
mentioned in comments 6 and 11, and with that running in a HV KVM guest I was
able to boot a nested guest running the cirros image.

I can report that I ran into the same issue. I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
and I got the blinking cursor in the upper left corner at the sd_crypt
password screen (although it's not a "black" screen, it's the standard
splash screen with password prompt).

For the additional pools one might have, I adapted the script so it
snapshots everything else.
To trigger the script I added a new service zfs-import-scan.service, and
I adapted the existing zfs-mount.service to include it. This way

I've been having the same issue for a number of months now, not fixed on
the upgrade to 16.10. It's now happening multiple times a day, meaning
the laptop needs to be connected via ethernet for it to be reliable.
Anything I can do? Just report it to the Ubuntu repository kernel like

I also can confirm that the only thing needed to reproduce this bug is,
as chiron wrote, to lock the laptop and try to login, although it
