I found the problem. It had nothing to do with kernels. The udev rule 56-hpmud.rules was left over from 14.04 through the upgrade to 15.04. The action it induced when the printer is connected broke the printer identification. Removing the rule fixed the problem. This udev rule was part of the hpl
