you are right: converting to vector is an option.
In my (few) test this procedure requires some time (sometimes a lot of
time) which is not convenient for a simple pixel-inspector (you are right.
This is my idea).

Well, I am sure it is possible, but involves much more work.
The profile tool, just extracts the line and then I give the line and
the raster to Sextantes profile function and it returns the values.
Your variant, like a "Pixel-Inspector", involves many more GUI stuff
