Hi Stefan,
you are right: converting to vector is an option.
In my (few) test this procedure requires some time (sometimes a lot of
time) which is not convenient for a simple pixel-inspector (you are right.
This is my idea).

PS AFAIR there was a sort of pixel inspector tool on OJ the Merge, again
connected to GDAL drivers.
