Check your caps lock setting, also make sure you do
not configure user authentication method during installation (NIS, LDAP etc etc)
just leave it default.

follwing.
After starting your computer and before linux
starts loading, press ctrl+x to get into the text mode, you will see the boot:
prompt, enter "linux 1" here, obvoiusly wothout the quotes.
This will log you in to single user mode
