Also, make sure that net.lo is turned on. I had a problem a while ago
with KDE taking forever to boot & interact because net.lo wasn't
starting in the init scripts. I guess its required.

I have not recompiled kmail since I installed it the very first time. I
have recompiled kdelibs though, because I added hal support, however
the problem with kmail was there before this.
The version of kmail (as indicated by the e-build) is 3.4.3.
