There's two forms of notation. Algebraic notation is easier to
fathom. In algebraic the files are lettered a through h from White's
queen's rook right to white's King's rook. The ranks are then
numbered from 1 to 8 counting from white's first rank. So a move of

misscounted moving one of my opponent's peaces sinse each game I tried I'd
get a ways through and then the computer would tell me to move something I
thought was an empty square or the like.

when playing against either a human or a program. When the opponent tells
you to move a knight to f6, make the move on your board.
