I had a lot of trouble installing FreeDOS onto an old laptop, and here is
how I got it to work.
Do you have a Windows computer? I have only tested this using Windows, but
it should work on a Mac. I'm not sure about Linux, as I haven't run any
virtualization software on Linux before.

I don't know if this is of any help, but I seem to recall running DOS on an
old Dell laptop and pressing a key combination, (Fn and F8 possibly, but I
wouldn't put money on it) to switch to the external monitor. Being a HP,
the key would be different, (maybe F2) but it's got to be worth a try...

I've got a similar setup, however I use WordPerfect 5.1. I really am too
easily distracted!

Sorry I couldn't make this one, which I've been looking forward to.
Something, (football) came up! I'll see you all next time. 😁

I've installed freedos because I'm writing my second novel, but I'm easily
distracted, so I wanted a machine with a decent word processor,
(Wordperfect 5.1) and no internet access or games to distract me. I have
deleted the games folder, but accidentally installed MS Word 5, which will
do the job.
I've decided that it's probably easier to just boot from the usb stick, and
then I can use the hard drive for something else.

will be finished!
Oh yeah, and I have to uninstall the games. :-)

Hi,
I installed freedos on my IBM Thinkpad T43 and I installed a usb driver,
which works. Sort of.
I can access a 2gb usb stick, which is formatted to FAT32, and that's
great, but I want to use a different stick.
This is where the problems begin. It's a 128gb stick. If I find a way to

I have an IBM Thinkpad T43 and also either an R40 or R60, (I'd have to go
upstairs and check) so if your laptop is either one of those, let me
know and I'll try an install.

Hi,
Since this is a FreeDOS group, I'm going to assume this is the operating
system you want to boot. I believe that you can create a working FreeDOS
installation on USB, however I can't test it this evening, as I am busy
doing other testing, of an alcohol based nature!
I'd say give it a go. What
I don't know if this is any help but I am currently installing FreeDOS
using PCem, on an Atom based Stick PC.
What are you planning on using the legacy os for?

I would be tempted to install windows xp, which I believe this laptop
shipped with, then install virtual pc, (the version before Microsoft bought
it) and run the various dos/Windows 3.1 machines in a virtual environment.
Or install linux and find a virtual pc solution for that.
Dos and win 3.1 do
That sounds like the sort of thing I'd be interested in doing, but what
sort of article are they looking for? Are they after a "history of FreeDOS"
type article, because that's been done so many times it would be hard to
write anything original, wouldn't it?
I look forward to hearing your thoughts
I can't do any research at the moment, (busy doing the night before prep
for a funeral) but I did a quick Google search, using the words "usb mouse
driver for dos" without the quotes, and that bought up a shed load of
potentially useful hits.
Hope this helps.

What's the game you're trying to run and how much RAM do you have?
I'm just thinking that if we can try and replicate the issue we might be
able to figure it out.

In my opinion, the only advantage is that long file names are more
descriptive than 8.3 but that being said, I'm old and used to coming up
with short but descriptive names, so I'm not really bothered one way or the
other.

OK, so the cat is now awake, and I have installed a fresh copy of FreeDOS
1.3 on VirtualBox. The DVD is visible. This is weird.
Can you copy and paste the contents of your fdauto.bat file into an email,
to help with further diagnosis?

You should look at fdauto.bat, copy and paste the relevant lines into the
copy on your hard drive and copy the files it calls into the dos folder.
I think that'll work. :)

Hi Eric!
I do have the img images for wordperfect, which I have transferred to

to recognise the cd drive, as the hard drive parameters have to be manually
entered. I have an isa sound Blaster awe 64 value, with ide connect
Hi,
So, I've got the 486 computer working and am ready to install freedos and
wordperfect.
I'm thinking there are a couple of advantages to installing onto a
virtualbox machine, then formatting the physical hard drive and copying the
contents over.
It would be a lot quicker to install and I'd ha
4pm local time for those in the UK. I look forward to seeing you all then.

My problem is that I sit down wanting to write a chapter or two, and the
ideas are in my head, (no, really!) but then I'll accidentally fire up
YouTube or even worse, Kick Off 2 Online. Once that happens, the chances of
getting any work done are reduced to virtually zero!

I'm guessing that I'm the only one who isn't interested in connecting to
the Internet using freedos. I wouldn't have a problem with others doing
it,but for me it would be yet another distraction. 😀

I'm going to make it my new year project to finish getting the 80486 pc
working, and once I've upgraded the memory, (4 Meg isn't going to be
enough, is it?) I'll be using freedos as the only operating system for my
distraction free writing pc.

Hi guys,
Apologies if I'm way off target here, as I am no FreeDOS expert, but as
soon as I read the words "Opcode error" my first thought was has he tried
pressing tab and adding the word raw to the end of the command line in the
boot options?
Hope this helps,
John.
