Wow, you folks are into details I'm not nearly up with
yet.
I use Freedos via dosemu in Debian Linux. The Freedos
version is 0.82. I've had no issues with it yet, but
an earlier version ran on a DOS system crashed and
took the entire disk system with it.
I have DRDOS available on my Linux system

As a suggestion from Eric I also tried X=A000-EFFF to completely disable
UMBs. But that didn't do.
It only works if I completely disable EMM386.
That shows that the error is not be looked for in HIMEM.
