In the meantime, I to made some progress.
As that thread was apparently sleeping in libsoup. I replaced my stock
2.31.92 libsoup with a fresh 2.33.90 version.
It appears to be MUCH better or maybe even flawless now.

Evolution just got flaky on me. Actually I can't tell if it's evolution
or my email service, fastmail. I use fastmail & an IMAP setup. It's
been working fine, then last nite it won't show any of the emails in the
IMAP inbox. It shows that there are 19 unread emails in the inbox. I

may be a fastmail.fm issue so I've posted the question on that forum
