I did indeed just encounter this problem today. I was already using
latest indicator-printers 0.1.7+14.04.20140527-0ubuntu1.
After reading above, I did:
apt-get remove --purge indicator-printers
apt-get install indicator-printers
reboot

I also would like very much that this bug be fixed. I use this functionnality
for more than 10 years now.
My last version was Xubuntu 12.04 and I am very disappointed with this bug in
Unitiy on 14.04, and may return to Xubuntu if this bug is not fixed.

Hey Laney, could you look if that's to due with the gtk update or the
gnome->adwaita icon theme change? Seems like quite some notify-osd icons
are wrong/changed on vivid with some recent update
