FWIW, I agree that time metrics have been very useful in the past. The
reasoning around perf overhead seems reasonable as well. Can we agree on a
subset of time metrics that we feel would be super useful for debugging?

So, it looks like QueryableStoreTypes would be part of the streams library,
right? If a developer needs to support a new store, would they need to
change code in streams?

Could you describe how recovery works in this mode? Say, we had a 250 MB
preallocated segment and we wrote till 50MB and crashed. Till what point
do we recover? Also, on startup, how is the append end pointer set even on
a clean shutdown? How does the FileChannel end position get set to 50 MB

I agree that the metadata topic is required to build a batching semantic
that is intuitive.
One question on the config -
autostop.at
I see one value for it - eol. What other values can be used? Instead, why
would we not have batch.mode=true/false?

1. I totally agree on the naming. The appid for transactions is really an
instance id. Any recommendation for a name is appreciated. We had thought
of instance id, session id or app id and went with app id.
2. We also discussed about init() method but that could add its own set of
confusion t

I am not sure if it is a good idea to support both init() and lazy
initialization. The ideal state would have been to implement init as a non
blocking api and have the rest of the methods throw uninitialized exception
if init was not called. This would ensure that init can still be used by

Radai,
I think it is important to understand the key requirements that we don’t
want to compromise. We can then understand the tradeoffs of the different
approaches. We did in fact start with the double journal approach couple of
years back. I will highlight the must have requirements first and th
small correction in my third point -
3. IO and memory constraints - We would want a solution that *does not take*

To add to this discussion, I do think we should think about this in
increments. We do a full recovery today and the EOS proposal will not make
this any worse. Using store snapshot is a good option to avoid store

The failure really means that the filesystem is configured incorrectly

I am still not convinced why a stream processing framework closely tied to
Kafka will not help with this (since we are also referring to some basic
transformations). The devil is in the details of the design and I would be

streaming really does not indicate "stream processing".

I had the same thought. Kafka processor, KProcessor or even Kafka
stream processor is more relevant.

I think the manual way of setting the throttling value is a good first step
and definitely required when things go bad. We should continue discussing
how we can build more intelligence over this incrementally.

FWIW, Apache Kafka has evolved a lot from where it started. It did start as
a messaging system. Over time we realized that that the vision for Kafka is
to build a streaming platform and not just a messaging system. You can take
a look at the site for more description about what comprises the stream
-1 for all the reasons that have been described before. This does not need
to be part of the core project.
