As Laney mentoned Shipping upower 0.99 only for GNOME would be a lot of
work. I have however managed to untangle the gnome-desktop transition
from upower, so we can now land that without upower 0.99, in which case
landing upower transition as soon a V opens should probably be ok.

I'm using a Dell m3800 laptop which I just wiped to run Linux and this
bug is extremely annoying. During a evenings work of 3-4 hours this
happens once almost every hour. The only way I can get around it is by
closing the lid, wait for laptop to go to sleep mode and then open it up
again and "tada"

I have now recreated using utopic-desktop-amd64.iso (20140923) and

A similar problem was observed with VirtualBox at bug #1365336. I guess
the root of both problems can be the same: in recent VirtualBox
versions, no framebuffer device is being exposed by the kernel "a
priori" in a guest Ubuntu-daily system.
Have you tried to boot on a VMware virtual machine?

After removing both 'quiet' and 'splash' options from
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub, and running 'sudo
update-grub', I am no longer able to recreate the bug (over 100 boots on
a 64-bit kvm instance using utopic-desktop-amd64.iso (20140923)).
