Things that I noticed:
Sometimes the drum sounds on login actually get played but after that the
computer stays mute.
If nothing else this tells me the speakers are working fine, so no hardware
failure here.
When I ran ubuntu-bug on this and it tried to play a test sound I could hear
the speaker

just installed 12.04 64 bit on a third machine with a more modern nvidia

Really, no logging or blocking of failed log-in attempts? Did no one
learn from computing history?
Also another failing of lightdm is it fails to respond to the power
button, even if you have set it under Gnome, etc, to do an orderly shut-
down. There have been times when a keyboard/mouse problem
