After applying a patch for Bug #1264886 and setup the a52 plug-In, I am
able to play Norrlanda.wav via Totem with 5.1 channels to my amp.
I think this proves the following:
1. My hardware setup is OK
2. The low level alsa driver is able to output AC3

Thanks for your advice, i am hoping the Intel driver does fix it when it is
eventually released. Thought would identify the non-Intel drivers dont
