I forgot to mention I have tried this with every kernel from 2.6.15-15
to -19 and they all do the same thing

I tried 2.6.15-19 and 2.6.15-18 in recovery mode with startx and it is
the same as above except that it skips steps 3 & 4.
btw Sitsofe - caps lock goes AWOL too

Yeah it does seem to be bug number 21 for the X600 :( I am now using
the vesa driver and it works, with a max res of 1600x1200 instead of the
usual 1920x1200

Just to give a bit more info which might help someone looking into this
I have got my box again working with the ati driver @ 1920x1200 ! I had
to disable dri support, oh well.

I hope I changes this to the right status. Using the latest version of this
package everything is working fine, so I thought I would close
I forgot to update this, but in dapper as of a few weeks ago this now seems to
be fixed. In gnome 2.14 there seems to be some better error handling.
I will list some gotcha here for google to find and hopefully help others:

The "beep on message" functionality of xchat (not xchat-gnome) in dapper
doesn't work.
It seems it is an esd related problem. When following the instructio
