Yes, requesting suspend through the session indicator works as expected.
I do recall having to add a boot parameter to get that to work. If I'm
not mistaken, "acpi_sleep=nonvs" was the one, but I also have nomodeset.

Running gnome-settings-daemon without debug output produced nothing when
the lid was closed.
Running it with the debug output produced the attached - notably, gsd
seems to think there is still an external monitor connected, which there
definitely isn't.

Yes, this is still an issue for me. Yes it is reproducible - I just have
to log out and log back in and it crashes shortly after the Unity
launcher is displayed. I assume there's something in some setting
somewhere that the program doesn't like, but I don't know where I should
start looking.

Hurrah! I no longer get nagged at boot time, and selecting Disk Utility
from the System menu the reallocated sector count now matches what the
command line tools say. For me at least, this does indeed appear to be
