The backtrace suggests a fd leak but it could be another process having
the issue and just letting the system in a state where gdm errors out
due to it

Agreed on the close, the main issue, the disorganisation of the
packages to the level of unusability is fixed.
A separate report for the missing dependency was filed.
I hereby exhort the extension developers to step up their game with
the upgrades, but they are not listening and I cant ask anyone

TBH I have no firm opinion on the trade off between Settings and Tweaks
(the latter not installed by default in Ubuntu). Just wanted to mention
that you don't necessarily need to use terminal commands to do it.
