I had the blank screen, no login screen problem.
The computer was otherwise running though.
I ssh-ed from another computer to the problem computer
to execute the suggested commands.
If on a home network you can login to your router with a

I'm also experiencing this, and I also have a 4k monitor, although not
the same model as David. Mine is an LG 27UD58-B. It's hooked up to a KVM
switch and might be taking longer to come up than is normal, but I

with Unity/LightDM to 17.10 with GNOME/GDM, meaning that one or more
previously available keyboard layouts are no longer available on the

Per comment #9, I confirm it only happens on gnome-shell on wayland mode.
I tested thoroughly over the last few days and I did not experience a single
crash on gnome-shell on Xorg.Once I switch back to gnome-shell on wayland, the
frequent crashes start happening again.

Also this feature is not one that Ubuntu would have chosen to implement.

Allow changing of the top panel's colour and transparency levels without
