This conflates multiple issues into one. Many symptoms are due to gdm
restarting itself in the middle of the dist-upgrade and leaving gdm
half-configured and utterly broken. I'm going to use this bug report for
this issue. Please wait for version 0ubuntu3 (which will fix lots of
bugs).

Indeed upstream uses /etc/gdm/custom.conf, and we have a patch which
changes the name to be loaded. We should remove that patch, move an
existing gdm.conf-custom to custom.conf during upgrade.

Dear Matt,
I fear I have not made myself clear.
The error in Gnome, (nautilus?) Places > Bookmarks entries is due to the
fact that there is no clear error message when a connection fails due to
ssh key mismatch. It would prove difficult to attach a screen shot of
something that fails silently
Your original report stated:
The error message will be "Service Unavailable"
Please attach a screenshot of the dialog box which includes that text
you quoted, so we can be sure that we know which one it is.
Hand-editing ~/.ssh/known_hosts should be an easy way to reproduce the
error.

Thank you for your bug report, that's not a bug though, the option is
off by default in jaunty because there it couldn't tell the difference
