I can confirm the bug in Hardy as described by vipaca.
The error in .xsession-errors:

Interestingly opening the file with gedit via the terminal works:
gedit ~/.gvfs//

As a workaround I've found that bookmarking the samba share in nautilus and
then selecting this bookmark from gedit's open file dialog (i.e.
File->Open...(Left hand side of dialog under places)), then accessing the
file seems to work the best.

Tried this with Hardy Alpha 5 LiveCD; the bug is still there. In
Nautilus, I double-clicked on a .txt file that is located on a Samba
share; Gedit opened and displayed the same error as with Gutsy ("Could
not open the file smb://myserver/myshare/somefolder/readme.txt.

I have exactly the same problem with Ubuntu 7.04 final. I tested also
with Fedora 6 and OpenSUSE 10.2 (Gnome). There the error doesn't occur.

I have some more information. When you go through gedit's menus (e.g.
File->Open location) you can open the file by entering the URL of the
share, in my case "smb://twin4/ftp-install/fc-devel/rsync_update",
however, if I attenpt to run gedit from the command line with "gedit
smb://twin4/ftp-instal
