I have some more information. When you go through gedit's menus (e.g. File->Open location) you can open the file by entering the URL of the share, in my case "smb://twin4/ftp-install/fc-devel/rsync_update", however, if I attenpt to run gedit from the command line with "gedit smb://twin4/ftp-install/fc-devel/rsync_update" I see the same failure as when I double click a file name in nautilus.
