I'm also seeing this error. I confirm all of the above in Hardy Heron. The configuration needed is a samba server, a mounted share from the server, access the share via nautilus. Double click to open text file from share.
I've also noticed a correlation between the time of the natilus access to the folder and the file access being critical the success of opening the file. It also seems that when using the file list drop down the file will never access the file with success.
