Hi Murat,
since I read all this and you've wrote that their should be a checkup on all
keys which don't provide the action they supposed to, I'd like to add e.g.
desktop+gnome+volume_manager the keys #automount_drive #automount_media
are invalid so far because they are handled by nautilus.

I'm just updating this one as a reminder:
The way Hardy is now, I still cannot select the VLC player to be my
default player upon entry of a video DVD. We are at RC stage now and
this issue has still not been addressed.
Can you guys please look into this one, it affects a lot of people since

Sorry to have taken so much time, been a way a while and have also been

mystictim, /etc/gnome/defaults.list is meant as a read-only file where
the GNOME default mimetypes are listed. You shouldn't modify it. Your
method is an intrusive workaround and is not acceptable as a way of
customizing what's choosable in the Media tab of the Nautilus
preferences.

The bug here is meant to be the fact that there's no longer a way to
easily specify a custom application to be launched upon DVD, audio CD
and music player insertion. A separate bug should be filed about that in
the upstream bug tracker if the reporter finds it necessary.

I don't think this is a bug as such just a confusing and obscure method of
configuring Ubuntu. To get VLC to play DVDs by default I followed the advice
given at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=733559 #8
Step 1 is to set VLC as the default DVD player via:
$ sudo gedit /ect/gnome/defaults.
not sure what the bug is there, the several pages of comment doesn't
make easy to understand the issue, could somebody do a short summary?

Sebastien, since Nautilus does the mounting, and g-v-m has nothing to do

The bug is really confusing, gconf is a database where keys have values,
gconf-editor is a graphical editor to change those. If you browse any
key, edit its value and gconf get the update value the system works
correctly. Now how whatever application is using what is stored that is

So does this mean that ignored settings in gconf-editor are considered a

Sorry if I came off harsh, but it seems to me that I was not the one

If VLC isn't listed, that's a bug; a separate one. File it. There are
other bugs about other apps not being listed, e.g. Epiphany. It's not
good practice to deal with separate issues in the same bug report.

Right, then why isn't VLC listed as a possible application to launch
upon entry of a DVD player?
The only options I have in Nautilus are:
1) Open Movie Player
2) Open Folder
3) Do Nothing
4) Ask what to do. Which gives a list of the 3 previous ones.
So, how do I define VLC (or any other applicati

The key values set and read by gconf-editor are correct.
However, Gnome ignores these settings.
So, either gconf-editor is not handling it properly, or another
application is overriding the settings of the gconf-editor (or gnome for
