When i update to the latest kernel from kernel.org this problem goes away.
However some other things brake so i went back to the stock Dapper
kernel..and still have this problem.
The first key press simply isn't registered, and if it is registered
it's not displayed in the text box.

Since I removed the symlink /etc/rc2.d/S98mountnfs, pointing to
/etc/init.d/mountnfs.sh. This issue is resolved for me.

Getting a backtrace of the crashes would be a good start. You can get one
easily by clicking on the "send upstream" button of the dialog which is opened
when it crashes, the details of the window opened then has the backtrace. Other
way getting a backtrace using gdb:

Many Java applications are still written for java 1.4.2. I have seen
other gtk themes work fine in 1.4.2 and 1.5.x. That being said there
should be a way to get it to function properly with the existing GTK
interface in Java.

This problem affects Qt 4 applications as well - it also affects point
sizes other than 12. Upgrading to the 2.8 version of the Deja Vu fonts
solved the problem.

and tested Java 1.6.0-beta2 and the problem is already solved in this
version. Java 6 comes with a better implementation of GTK Look and Feel,

I solved my problem by removing all .gnome directories and by restoring some
settings later.

i install a blank dapper. Then i want to hear mp3
so i had to install the plugins, bad* ugly* . I used synaptic to do

So i removed the gstreamer0.8 and used 0.10 only.
