Brice,
In XFree86 glxgears was a fairly reliable indicator
of whether things were horribly broken or moving
along well. Running flightgear flightsim would always
parallel the performance, albiet much slower.
In Xorg, that doesn't seem to be the case. However,

You shouldn't use glxgears as a benchmark, it really isn't one
unfortunately. If you want to know whether DRI works, glxinfo will tell
you (look for "direct rendering: Yes" on line #4).

Brice,
I'll send a second e-mail on the results after reboot...
Okay, now I'm getting the stripes of red, green and blue
across my LCD where glxgears is running (they always match
the running program in the y-axis (vertical) and spread
all the way across the x-axis.
The frame rate is now:

Brice,
Thanks. It looks like I'm at
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12
There's a 1.3 in there. And have
xserver-xorg-video-mga 1:1.4.6.dfsg.1-3
Which I've taken to mean yes. Is this correct?
I've done so much install and re-test that
I've lost track of what else I've tried to get

Did you try xserver-xorg-core 1.3 and xserver-xorg-video-mga 1.4.6.1 as
explained earlier? They've been in Debian testing for a while now, it's
very easy to upgrade...

No need anymore. xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-2 and
xserver-xorg-video-mga 1:1.4.6.1.dfsg.1-2 are both in unstable now. But,
you'll have to upgrade your libc to 2.5.

Brice,
Sorry about causing a bit of confusion about my xorg.conf.
The unedited original that worked (but was simple/single-head)
was xorg.conf.good. The installation did *not* come up as dual-head.
To enable dual-head, I manually edited xorg.conf. The script you had
me run displayed the *hand

Which xserver-xorg-core and xserver-xorg-video-mga packages do you have?
Could you try upgrading them to experimental ? (

Bug#417601: x11r6: On startup, X11 reports that my G450 is not DRI capable.
