OK, what I thought. Meaning we only need to check ldd's output for
/usr/local and /usr/X11R6, there's no special search path magi

Yes, in /etc/ld.so.conf :

IIRC the last time it was that library as well.

That reminds me of some bug report where there were some libraries

Ok, I will check the gdm logfile next time.
Finally, I put the original hard disk back

Maybe the one with no info is a restarted one?
No, it ends up with :

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0

Hi there,
I updated my home desktop system to squeeze this weekend and was hit
by this same Matrox G550 bug. As soon as the xserver is started, the
screen turns completely black. I coudn't even switch back to console mode
(either MDA text console or VESA framebuffer console). The monitor

Hello,
I am, too, hit by the same bug. And for me too, the only solution has been to
switch to the "vesa" Driver instead of the "mga" Driver :-(
Everything worked fine with Matrox cards on Debian while XFree was used. Sin
I tried mga again with the new xserver-xorg 1:7.5 that just hit squeeze.
It made no difference.
It still just gives a black screen. It is a shame that the state of
graphics cards in Linux is still in
such bad shape. Especially when the mga driver used to work so well in
Linux before the last

I pointed my deb-src to lenny to get the old xserver-xorg-video-mga.
Then I did:
apt-get -b source xserver-xorg-video-mga
and
dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-mga_1.4.9.dfsg-1_i386.deb
to install what was built. If that is what you mean by build against
the 1.6 server, then it
didn't change anything.

mga is not really maintained upstream anymore so unless your problem is
obvious, you will have to wait before getting a fix.
You could try to rebuild the old mga driver against the new
Any information on this bug yet? Do you need any more information from

I upgraded xserver-xorg... that hit squeeze recently. I also updated
xserver-xorg-video-mga.
When I restarted X, I don't get a gdm login screen it is just black. I can
