I tried mga again with the new xserver-xorg 1:7.5 that just hit squeeze. It made no difference. It still just gives a black screen. It is a shame that the state of graphics cards in Linux is still in such bad shape. Especially when the mga driver used to work so well in Linux before the last tw

I pointed my deb-src to lenny to get the old xserver-xorg-video-mga. Then I did: apt-get -b source xserver-xorg-video-mga and dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-mga_1.4.9.dfsg-1_i386.deb to install what was built. If that is what you mean by build against the 1.6 server, then it didn't change anything.
