Asus has published a BIOS update for this motherboard (version 0709,
dated April 2010) that finally fixed this issue for me. I'd say the bug
can be closed.

Sadly, the updated ASUS bios does not fix this issue.

way to build just the FreeType library without -O2 the way the Imakefiles
are structured. But then again, I'm hardly an expert on imake or the
XFree86 build system, so maybe somebody has a better idea.
